Morto all’età di 59 anni Andre Harrell, famosissimo produttore discografico e rapper statunitense. J D Nice ha rivelato la triste notizia mentre girava su Instagram Live per la sua popolare serie di quarantena del Club venerdì sera. Nato a New York, Harrell ha iniziato la sua carriera musicale come artista, metà del primo duo rap Dr. Jeckyll and Mr. Hyde, il cui singolo Genius Rap è stato un successo nel 1981. Due anni dopo ha collaborato con Russell Simmons, il fondatore della Def Jam Records, e ha avuto una delle sue prime esperienze nel settore lavorando come vice presidente e successivamente GM dell’etichetta che lascia per fondare una propria casa discografica, la Uptown Records, nel 1986.
Elegante, sofisticata e fashion-forward, l’etichetta ha giocato un ruolo chiave nello sviluppo dello stile New Jack Swing di R&B, grazie ad artisti come Guy (con l’enormemente influente produttore-performer Teddy Riley), Al B. Sure e Jodeci, così come padre Mary MC. Harrell. Ha anche prodotto ll’adolescente Mary J. Blige alla fine degli anni ’80.

RIP Andre Harrell. Whether we knew it or not, he had such a huge influence on the R&B/hip-hop my generation grew up loving. He signed and mentored so many great artists, made so much great music happen, helped shape the culture
