Agli MTV Video Music Awards 2020, trionfo assoluto di Lady Gaga e delle sue maschere anti-Covid con ben 5 premi, davanti ad Ariana Grande e i BTS, mentre Taylor Swift entra nella storia e il Black Lives Matter aleggia
Lady Gaga ha trionfato nell’edizione 2020 degli MTV Video Music Awards, i primi premi del mondo dello spettacolo da quando è iniziata la pandemia. Gaga ha vinto cinque premi tra cui quelli di cantante dell’anno e canzone dell’anno. Durante le varie apparizioni sul palco, la cantante e attrice ha indossato una notevole collezione di mascherine e protezioni anti-Covid (invitando gli spettatori a fare altrettanto), tra mirabolanti cambi d’abito e un mega medley di nove minuti tratto dal suo ultimo album Chromatica, concluso dal duetto con Ariana Grande in Rain on Me.
E dietro Lady Gaga c’è proprio Ariana Grande (erano le artiste più nominate della serata), che porta a casa quattro premi di cui tre per Rain on Me con Gaga e uno per Stuck with You con Justin Bieber. Notte indimenticabile anche per i lanciatissimi giovani coreani dei BTS, che hanno stravinto nelle categorie Miglior Pop, Miglior K-Pop e Miglior gruppo. Ma anche Taylor Swift entra nella storia, diventando la prima artista donna a vincere per la regia con il suo singolo The Man in cui critica il machismo di molti pessimi uomini, in epoca #MeToo. Torna invece a casa a mani vuote Billie Eilish, nonostante ben sei nomination.
Non mancano i temi legati alle proteste del Black Lives Matter: The Weeknd ha vinto due premi, quello per il Miglior video Blinding Lights e il Miglior R&B, con un appello alla giustizia per Jacob Blake e Breonna Taylor, due vittime della brutalità della polizia. Commosso anche l’omaggio a Chadwick Boseman, l’attore di Black Panther morto venerdì scorso di cancro a soli 43 anni, definito «un vero eroe» dalla presentatrice della serata, Keke Palmer.
La serata è stata segnata dal Covid con poco pubblico anche nei collegamenti all’esterno, gli artisti che hanno mandato ringraziamenti virtuali e l’introduzione di due nuovi premi: per il miglior video da casa e la miglior performance in quarantena.
